Dorset based Tea Hunters
The Gilded Teapot was founded in 2010 in Dorset by Jo Davies. Inspired by her love of tea, Jo opened The Gilded Teapot, a tea shop in an old tobacconists in her home town of Dorchester. Tired of the usual mass-produced offerings in teabags, she set out to hunt down the finest loose leaf teas from around the world, and wanted to create a business that celebrates craftsmanship, provenance, and exploration.
“I love hearing about people’s first tea and coffee experiences that got them into loving it – be it supping Tibetan tea with butter, sipping Moroccan mint in a marketplace, or a thimbleful of dark thick Turkish coffee.
Here’s my earliest tea memory I’d like to share. It isn’t especially glamorous or exotic, but it is the one that has stayed with me the most:
My family have always been big tea drinkers, and my Grandparents ran a hotel – my brother and I used to run around in the kitchens during school holidays, and once we went to the Cash and Carry on their usual supply run (we loved riding on the big flatbed trollies). My Grandparents bought an industrial sack packed full of tea bags, and this particular one was having a giveaway – do you remember those dolls called Trolls? The ones with the hair? Well, there was one of these trolls in the tea sack, and one of the guys in the kitchen gave it to me. I must admit, I wasn’t really into the Trolls – I found them a bit scary to be honest – but I loved this one. Because this Troll was different. This Troll’s hair smelled of tea.
I’ve now been in specialist tea for ten years. The most memorable and truly great parts have to be meeting the growers, sampling the harvests from the new seasons, and tasting something you have never seen before that takes your breath away. There is always something new to learn, it never stops, and somehow, it feels like that little troll got me started. And that’s how it all began.”
